Run was created by filmmaker and director Mat Johns, who is based in Manchester, UK. It was submitted as part of Filmonik’s Halloween Kino Kabaret in 2012, which means he only had a few days to complete the project — writing, directing, editing, and screening. It follows backpacker Sam as he narrates a letter written to his mother as he travels around the world, and it is… haunting. It’s a mere 7 minutes long but it packs an impressive amount of emotion and tension into that short span. The perspective — an almost poetic reading over these brief, nostalgic glimpses into his travels — is a unique one, and the warm, almost wistful mood makes the final reveal even more shocking. It’s incredibly well done and I can’t wait to check out more of his work!
